Shopping for Walking Shoes

Finding the right men’s walking shoes can mean the difference between an enjoyable stroll and a painful trek.

Making the decision to take up walking for your health is a great way to get in shape. Walking offers many of the benefits of other exercises such as running, but the low-impact nature of walking allows you to avoid the muscle and joint injuries that can plague many joggers. This doesn’t mean that you can’t get hurt while walking, though. This is especially true if you don’t have the right footwear. If you are looking to start walking on a regular basis, you’ll want to upgrade from your everyday sneakers to dedicated men’s walking shoes.

Most men’s shoes are not made for active walking. Wearing the wrong shoes can lead to painful blisters, shin splits or muscle strains which can keep you from running. Buying a good pair of men’s shoes specifically designed for walking is a great investment if you are serious about making a commitment to exercise. Being able to walk pain-free might make the difference between reaching your fitness goals and quitting before you hit the finish line.

So what should you be looking for in walking shoes? You’ll want a sole that is very flexible and provides more forgiveness than running shoes offer. This is because walkers roll their entire foot during their gait while runners tend to impact and rebound off the ground more quickly. Being able to twist and bend your toes inside your shoes will help you to maintain an even stride while walking.

You also want to make sure that the shoe is lightweight and breathes well. Most high-quality shoes such as top-of-the-line Adidas shoes will be made from a light material that won’t wear you down. Of course, you’ll sweat while you walk, so you want shoes that are designed to aerate your feet and keep them as cool and dry as possible.

Most importantly, you want shoes that fit. Make sure you have at least a half-inch between your toes and the end of your shoes when you try them on. This will give your feet room to expand as you walk, keeping your toes from being pinched and avoiding blisters to broken toenails.
